After moving 13-3-1 at the initial two rounds of the playoffs, we hit a speed bump last night from the opening match of the National League Championship Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Nationals. I felt that the Nats could be emotionally and physically drained . Washington utilized all three of the best starters in relief at some point in the series, and to me personally, it felt as though they were going to utilize game you to rest their pitching staff, and place their turning for the rest of the series, rather than go to extreme lengths to win the game, since they were forced to perform against LA..
They began Anibal Sanchez in game one. Most teams dont even carry four starters from the playoffs, so the fact that they turned to Anibal made me feel that they were planning to ride him until the wheels fell off. And then they did just that. The part I didnt see coming was that Sanchez could be unhittable. Very literally unhittable, since he had a no-hitter going until Jose Martinez struck it up at the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Nationals were petrified to go to their bullpen also they did not have to with Sanchez pitching into the eighth inning. This is the ultimate. They stole benefit and managed to break up starters and their bullpen. They all of the sudden possess the Cardinals on the principles as they have ace rookie Max Scherzer proceeding tonight in game 2, and if St. Louis can not knock off Mad Max, they will be down 0-2 at home, along with the show is basically over.
It is really hard to overestimate what a operation that the past was turned in by Sanchez, also at this point, Id venture out on a limb to say that the Nats are now the prohibitive favorites to win the National League pennant. For todays choice, we will stay here as the Cardinals as Nationals matchup in match two, using the NLCS.
The St. Louis Cardinals wind up in a must-win situation tonight in the house after dropping game one of the NLCS into Washington. St. Louis must discover a way to knock off Washington tonight because home underdogs, or this series has a opportunity to be over before it ever really gets started. For Washington, the Nationals would love to knock off the Cardinals back to back matches and head home with a 2 games.
Starting for the Nationals is Max Scherzer (1-0 2.77 ERA), and also for the Cardinals it is Adam Wainwright (0-0 0.00 ERA). The game is put in seven and a half conducts. The Nationals are all -128 road favorites. First pitch is scheduled for 1:08 PM PST from Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Max Scherzer has done everything that has been requested in the playoffs for Washington for him. Start and win the wild card match from a Milwaukee Brewers team? Check. Come from the bullpen in a spot on the road and close down a game? Check. Start and win against the Dodgers in an elimination match by throwing seven innings of both all one-run ball? Check.
It is hard to be superior than Scherzer has been in this postseason since the Nationals have won each game he has appeared in, and he has just pitched in scenarios. Scherzer was bit shaky in September after having two stints over the IL, but hes recovered his skills here from the playoffs, and he seems a lot.
Interestingly , Scherzer has struggled this year against St. Louis. In two starts, hes allowed eight earned runs in thirteen and two-thirds of an inning and contains an 0-2 record. Will Mad Max be able to keep his furious run on the road against a team hes struggled against this season through the playoffs tonight? I personally think so.
The Cardinals will look to fit Scherzer with Adam Wainwright. Since the thirty-eight-year-old pitched two-thirds of baseball and seven, wainwright came up huge for the Cardinals. But to mepersonally, that performance was a bit fluky. As he lost double-digit games this man did not have. And I am not sure he is the guy Id have gone to in a place. I would have gone with Dakota Hudson or made the choice that was better after they scored ten runs in the upper half of the first inning to sit down Jack Flaherty in game five against Atlanta.
That is the elephant in the room within this series. Jack Flaherty is by far the best that the Cardinals have so far as pitching goes. He was started by them in game of their NLDS, but they chose to go with Flaherty, when they jumped out to an insurmountable 10-0 first-inning direct. And not to get an inning or two, they pitched him the first five, and he is not available until game three. When it may be too late for St. Louis.
St. Louis will cover that choice tonight, because they have a lopsided pitching matchup involving a man that hasnt been elite since 2014, going against a man that just might be the best pitcher in the league at this time. I think Scherzer is powerful tonight. I cant imagine what Scherzer will be effective at, In case this team cans shut down. And while Wainwright could be decent, you can not expect him to go toe to toe using Scherzer all match long.
Ultimately, I think Washington takes a massive series lead and manages business tonight. The Cardinals needed to win with the number four man on the mound of Washington. They let him damn near no-hit them. Now they need to face some mixture of Stephen Strasburg, Max Scherzer, and Patrick Corbin and has to conquer all three of these. I dont see that happening. Give me that the Washington Nationals as road favorites in game two out of St. Louis setting -128!
