Dele Alli rescued a late stage for Tottenham to refuse people Watford a first Premier League win of the year amid video helper (VAR) confusion.
Hornets keeper Ben Foster flapped with Alli, at an 86th-minute cross Together with the hosts seeking a way back into the match.
The assistant referee examined the goal and determined it was given. The screen suggested that the choice wasno purpose. The goal came.
For intervals before Allis intervention, it had appeared like the side of Mauricio Pochettino were planning to endure a fifth defeat in six matches.
Watford, who lost Danny Welbeck took the lead once Abdoulaye Doucoure swept home Daryl Janmaats cross.
Plus they had a penalty appeal turned down by referee Chris Kavanagh – along with the VAR – when Gerard Deulofeu was brought down by Jan Vertonghen.
However, despite coming agonisingly close, their wait to get a first Premier League win proceeds and they remain bottom.
Watford will feel hard done by following VAR controversy.
It looked like they ought to have had a penalty when 1-0 up in the first half since Vertonghen leg attracted down Deulofeu in the box.
The VAR decided rather than awarding a punishment Spurs escaped Chris Kavanagh hadnt made a very clear and obvious error. Oneconclusion was affected by the VAR from the Premier League all season – using most reversals down to factual events.
It then looked as if the Hornets was given a reprieve when the screen saidno goal from the equaliser of Alli – although Kavanagh eventually made clear the goal had stood.
Players arent allowed to touch the ball prior to scoring with their arms – accidentally – under the new laws. It was determined the target should stand together with all the marginal call deeming the ball had come Allis shoulder off.
More to follow.
