Francesco Molinari has clarified his BMW PGA Championship win this past year as“enormous“ because of his optimism and a vital element that resulted in his unforgettable Open victory at Carnoustie.
Molinari made an outstanding display of front-running last May to maintain off playing-partner Rory McIlroy in Wentworth, and his success sparked a run of results which included his big title less than two weeks afterwards, where he again upstaged Tiger Woods and McIlroy.
The Italian also recorded a record-breaking five wins out of five though he picked up his sole silverware at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March and has had a more quiet 2019.
But he stays within the planet’s best 10 and is looking forward to defending his BMW PGA title.
Reflecting on his triumph May, Molinari explained:“It was enormous because I had been in a comparable position to last year here without being able to shut the tournament out. It just gave a lot of confidence to me.
„I was watching a movie of the last few holes Sunday, and you could see I was uncomfortable in that position. I believe that has been the very first step forward to becoming more comfortable in leading a championship and shutting it out.
„I believe if you compare it with Carnoustie, it is pretty easy to find the distinction. I’m quite happy the way it went and emphasise if I get into that position again this season I’ll hit a third shot !
„The win in the States (Quicken Loans National) clearly helped even more going in the Open, which gave me more confidence then going in the Ryder Cup. I’m sure once I stop playing, I will reflect on this past year but May, June, July have been something it would be difficult to replicate , especially those three weeks.
„Obviously I’ll work as hard as I can to get it done, but I know I’ve put a pretty substantial standard,“ added Molinari, who appeared on track to collect another important title in the Masters in April, just to find water twice over the back nine on Sunday since Woods stormed into his first important success in nearly 11 decades.
„I had a excellent start of the year and then, following the Masters, obviously I haven’t done too,“ said Molinari, that has not posted a top-10 finish within his eight starts since his Augusta National disappointment.
„I think there has been some scheduling issues. I’ve played golf that was decent at the other types, apart from the PGA. I’m happy the way I played with at The Open and the US Open, but I am happy how I played with in another tournaments.
„It’s tough to pinpoint 1 reason as to why. I’ve talked to the people around me and we’re attempting to work out the best way to proceed, and to play golf“
