Cup king Stradivarius rules supreme

Stradivarius ensured his successive victory in the Magners Rose Doncaster Cup with a dominant display.
The staying division has been dominated by john Gosden’s five-year-old over the last couple of seasons – with wins in the Yorkshire Cup, Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup and also Lonsdale Cup watching him spade the Weatherbys Hamilton Stayers’ Million in both 2018 and 2019.
In the immediate wake of his most recent victory at York, relations indicated his next port of call could be following month’s Long Distance Cup in Ascot – which he also won last year – but a late change of heart watched Gosden bring his charge into Town Moor.
Stradivarius had been the 1-9 favourite in the hands of partner Frankie Dettori and his legion of supporters had worries for the duration of this competition.
After initially being abandoned front, Oisin Murphy heading out to inject some speed in the race delivered on Andrew Balding’s Cleonte and he was going great guns rounding the turn for home.
But once popped the question Stradivarius reeled in the leader and kicked clear for a comfy victory.
Cleonte boxed on to meet with the place, together with the Willie Mullins-trained Max Dynamite – runner-up to stablemate Thomas Hobson in last year’s renewal – back in third.
Gosden said:“Frankie was appropriate to move forward, then Oisin determined he wanted to earn a race of it.
„He’s a lovely horse. I’d no intention of coming , but he had been so new, rearing up and crying all the time, so I thought we’d come back and win the Doncaster Cup – it hadn’t been the strategy, however Mr (Bjorn) Nielsen was very good about it.
„He is a stunning horse to train, however he had been becoming so lively in the home – this is a five-day entry so I had to place him in. If you wait around for Champions Day and it’s thick, he will not be running.“
He went on:“I think Mr Nielsen’s huge strategy, if the horse is happy and well, is to visit Ascot next year. He would like to win three Gold Cups. We are going to attempt to do this if we could and we’ll see what comes out of this Leger as challengers.
„He has had a much simpler season this year than last. The race at the Gold Cup (a year ago ) was mighty hard and he was a weary horse from the Lonsdale. He’s a horse that is very fresh still this year.
„I think next year’s it’s Ascot Gold Cup and probably Goodwood Cup, then we might worry about other alternatives.
„I think he would love to have a Sagaro, Yorkshire Cup – go this path again if the horse is in good arrangement, then regroup, which will be a bit of fun“
Dettori – in flying dismount kind – said“That is the easiest he’s won – he’s so good to ride, he relaxes, he quickens. Brilliant. We hoped it to be like that, although it was a race that is sloppy.
„I attempted to produce the running, but as we got into the bend he was looking at everything. Oisin ran keen and I got a tow. We went slow, so we sprinted the previous three and a half (furlongs).
„He has one more equipment than the rest, so I utilized Oisin as a reference stage – I gave him three or four spans start because I knew after I passed him he thinks he’s done enough.
„I utilized Oisin as tow to the furlong marker and ‘come on let us place the race ‘, and he won really easily.“
Before registering, Gosden had a word on his steady celebrity, the Enable, who is being prepared for an attempt on a half-dozen third victory in the Prix de Triomphe.
He explained:“She is in fantastic form. I could not be more pleased with her. She is in very good nick and we’ll build her around the Arc now.“
